Ambergris Caye has Belize's widest selection of restaurants of interest to visitors, ranging from inexpensive local spots and pizza joints to a few that are rated among the finest in the world. The emphasis is on seafood, of course, but many restaurants also serve chicken and pork. Lobster is usually the most-expensive item on the menu (in-season mid-July to mid-February), at around US$20. Pasta and Mexican-style dishes also are popular. After all that pricey seafood, an honest plate of Belizean beans and rice will taste real good. Dress is very casual, even at the spiffy places. Conch season is September 30-July 1st, and shrimp doesn't really have a season but very hard to get from June-August. Price ranges shown are for typical meals for one (usually dinner), not including tip, tax or alcoholic drinks. VAT of 15% may be charged at some restaurants, mainly higher volume places:

Lobster season (when you can eat lobster, fresh or otherwise) starts June 15th. Prior to 2003, no lobsters at all was available in the off season. In 2003, the Belize Tourism Board, Fisheries Department, and the Belize Hotel Association entered into a legal Memorandum of Understanding for a pilot program offering lobster during the closed months from February 15 to June 15. This is not lobster caught out of season, but rather lobster caught and readied for export. Participating hotels paid U.S. market prices plus contributed $3 per pound for the monitoring of the agreement. We shall see how this goes.

ANTOJITOS SANTELMO - A great little place just south of La Margarita, on the main drag, west side of the road across from the Saeed Bamboo shop. Green, screened, and very cool all day long. Great burritos, other local specialties, super reasonably priced.MASTER LEE'S- across from the old post office location... in the same row of storefronts as Gecko Graphics. It's a great bargain with a BIG chicken breast ( Mennonite chickens weigh in at 5-7 lbs. each), and a huge serving of fries or fried rice... all this for BZ$5 (US$2.50). Can't be beat!!!
